Wang Zhe: China's coating industry is maturing

September 21, 2005

this year is the last year of the tenth five year plan. At the China International Coating conference and coating and its raw material technology forum held in Guangzhou on September 18, Wang Zhe, President of China Coating Industry Association, reviewed the development of China's coating industry during the Tenth Five Year Plan period and summarized the ten characteristics of the development of the whole industry

Wang Zhe said that according to the statistics of the National Bureau of statistics, from 2000 to 2004, China's paint production increased from 1.839 million tons to 2.981 million tons, and has become the second largest vehicle in the world for paint production and consumption. During the "Tenth Five Year Plan" period, China's coating industry gradually moved from immature and non-standard market to relatively mature and standardized in the transformation from planned economy to market economy, and its ability to adapt to the rapidly changing economic environment and market demand increased by 50% year-on-year

Wang Zhe pointed out that during the "Tenth Five Year Plan" period, the development of China's coating industry has ten characteristics:

first, the ownership structure of the whole industry has undergone major changes, with state-owned, private and "three foreign-funded" enterprises at the forefront. At present, the main state-owned enterprises include Shanghai paint, Zhuhua group, Changzhou paint Chemical Research Institute, Qingdao Marine Chemical Research Institute and Northern paint research institute, etc; After more than ten years of development and expansion, private enterprises are now changing to establish a modern enterprise system; The top ten multinational companies in the world have set up factories in China and accelerated their localization. The capital share and market share of foreign-funded enterprises have increased to 30% - 40%

second, the intensity of the whole industry has increased. In 2004, the National Bureau of Statistics announced that the product sales of 1241 enterprises in the whole industry was 54billion yuan, of which the number of enterprises with sales of more than 100 million yuan accounted for 5% and the sales accounted for 38.5%. Among the top ten large enterprises in terms of sales revenue and output, multinational companies and domestic enterprises share equally, with a market share of more than 30%

third, three major paint production bases have been formed. After more than 10 years of competition and resource optimization, the Pearl River Delta, the fastest growing market economy, has developed steadily, accounting for 22.6% of the total; In recent years, the Yangtze River Delta has been the region with the most concentrated investment by multinational companies, accounting for 38.98% of the problem, and it is dominated by medium and high-end products; The Bohai Rim region has accounted for 13.1% of the total. Centered on Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, it is the largest coating consumption and production center in the north. This also shows that the intensity of the whole industry is gradually increasing from another aspect

fourth, China's paint import and export remained stable and increased slightly. The challenge of transforming the performance measured in the laboratory into commercial utilization has been proved to be far more than expected. According to customs statistics, the import and export volume of coatings in China in 2004 were 248000 tons (US $725 million) and 141000 tons (US $232 million), respectively, 0.8% and 15% higher than that in 2003. The export of coatings is still solvent based

fifth, the pace of specialization and collectivization of the whole industry has accelerated. Nippon, ICI, AkzoNobel, IP, Kansai, PPG, hemple, etc., which first entered China, are specialized companies in coatings for construction, corrosion protection, ships, containers, automobiles, etc. In recent years, China has formed a professional enterprise of floor coating represented by xiupo and Jingjiang, a professional enterprise of fireproof coating and coiled material coating represented by Jiangsu Lanling, and a professional enterprise of wood coating represented by China Resources, Jiabaoli, meitushi, zhanchen and Dabao in Guangdong. The coating raw material general resin has also formed professional companies such as Sanmu, Xianda, Changxing, Jiangmen, etc. it supplies the market in the form of commercialization, with a market share of more than 50%, and the development trend of specialization and collectivization is obvious

sixth, the integration of color matching (color paste, equipment, software management) has been widely promoted and applied in production and sales

seventh, the production capacity of titanium dioxide in China has increased rapidly, ranking second in the world. In particular, in the current environment with great downward pressure on the economy, the stone titanium dioxide has grown rapidly at several times, and has formed a number of major production bases, which to a certain extent meet the needs of the coating and building materials market. However, there is still a big gap between high-end varieties and product quality. Rutile titanium dioxide for coating is still mainly imported

eighth, the pace of standardization is accelerated. During the Tenth Five Year Plan period, China has made clear provisions in the standards for the contents of toxic and harmful free TDI, formaldehyde, "triphenyl" and heavy metals in interior decoration materials. The iso-14020 environmental labeling series certification standard for coatings, which was piloted in 2004, has basically brought its standard into line with international standards

ninth, brand awareness and strategy implementation have improved the overall competitiveness of the whole industry. Compared with the big brands of multinational companies, the brand awareness of Chinese coating enterprises started late, but now domestic enterprises have taken brand management as the establishment of enterprise form, which is of great significance to the study of computer control and the top priority to enhance the overall competitiveness of enterprises. At present, 8 Chinese famous brands of architectural coatings (interior and exterior walls) and dozens of national and local famous brands have emerged in the industry, but there is still a gap from "international brands"

10. The investment in technological research and development of enterprises has increased, and the research and development system has been initially established. Many enterprises have successively established national laboratories, provincial and municipal technology R & D centers and post doctoral workstations

At the same time, Wang Zhe pointed out the main problems existing in China's coating industry: the development is still unbalanced, and the operation quality is not high; The degree of intensification is still not concentrated enough; The degree of specialization needs to be strengthened; The technological innovation ability of enterprises is insufficient; Lack of technology and products with independent intellectual property rights; Laws and regulations and standardized management lag behind. He hoped that the coating industry would summarize and review the gains and losses of the development of China's coating industry in the past five years through the implementation of the "Tenth Five Year Plan", and continue to work together to promote China's transformation from a large coating country to a powerful coating country during the "Eleventh Five year plan"
